2nd leg of the “Tunog Natin!” Concert Series: The Fight for OPM's Survival Continues

Last Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 7PM, I was thrilled to grace the 2nd leg of the “Tunog Natin!” Concert Series. We all know that Original Pilipino Music (OPM) is fighting for the hearts and minds of Filipinos. Well, that struggle brought together Filipino artists and audiences at the grounds of Avida Towers Centera along Edsa.Ironically, the struggle took a celebratory form, showcasing the genius of Filpino singers, musicians and composers. It’s a tribute and a reminder of how important OPM is to all of us.

The first“Tunog Natin!” concert, held at the Ayala Triangle Gardens, was such a huge success that it inspired more artists and OPM supporters to participate in the second “Tunog Natin!” concert.

On the second leg,  “Tunog Natin!” rocked the Avida Towers Centera site along EDSA Corner Reliance St. The concert coincided with the launch date of the second tower of Avida Towers Centera, Avida’s latest condominium offering in Mandaluyong City.

Full force for OPM
The most respected artists in Filipino music from the 1980s, 1990s to the present joined forces to prove that OPM will always be relevant to Filipinos.

They includeded: rock legend The Dawn; pop rock artist Tanya Markova; and pop quartet Kiss Jane; pop and RnB artist Myrus; acoustic prince Davey Langit; and balladeer Faith Cuneta. True Faith, who performed in the first “Tunog Natin!” concert, got back and pleased the crowd with their New Wave-pop fusion.

Also performed was singer-songwriter and actress Aiza Seguerra, one of OPM’s most talented hit-makers.

The highlight of the night's show was undoubtedly the back-to-back performances of Kitchie Nadal and Barbie Almalbis. Kitchie’s edgy, intense vocals plus Barbie’s distinctly endearing singing style was a combination that brought audiences back to the 1990s, when these ladies ruled the alternative pop-alternative rock scene.

The legendary Mitch Valdez also graced the show. A veteran of music, theater, film and television, Mitch Valdez is one of the pillars of Original Pilipino Music and one of the founders of the Filipino singers’ organization Organisasyon ng mga Pilipinong Mang-aawit. She is currently the organization’s Chairman of the Board.

“Each leg of ‘Tunog Natin!’ offered something different throughout the concert series, to experience the richness of OPM. The concert featured the varied and exciting genres and artists within OPM. The artists in this second ‘Tunog Natin!’ concert are top-notch. Whether they are younger acts or veteran performers, they are simply the best in their respective genres,” says Myrus, Project Head of “Tunog Natin!”.

OPM forever
Event presenter Avida Land, Inc. was in full support of the show. “The success of the first “Tunog Natin!” concert proves that Filipino audiences have not totally abandoned OPM. We need to focus our efforts into putting more OPM ‘out there’ where audiences are able to hear and enjoy it,” explains Tess Tatco, Avida Land Marketing Manager.

“Tunog Natin!” is not only a great time for reminiscing over classic favorites, it’s also our chance to watch the next generation of performers take OPM into new heights and thrilling dimensions. Best of all, we’ll be helping continue OPM’s legacy for future generations.
